The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY)
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) is proposing the Digital India Act (DIA) to establish a contemporary legal framework for India's evolving digital landscape. The legislation is set to replace the 22-year old Information Technology Act of 2000 (IT Act) and is designed to be future-ready. The core components of the DIA will encompass online safety, trust, accountability, an open internet, and regulations for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. Additionally, the framework will include the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, Digital India Act Rules, National Data Governance Policy, and amendments to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to cybercrimes. The Digital India Act aims to ensure the openness, safety, trust, and accountability of the internet while safeguarding the rights of citizens.
