The Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence by UNESCO is a global standard on AI ethics, The Recommendation addresses ethical matters within the scope of UNESCO's responsibilities, with particular emphasis on the broader ethical implications of AI systems as they pertain to UNESCO's core domains: education, science, culture, communication, and information. Its primary goal is to establish a foundation for harnessing AI systems for the benefit of humanity, individuals, societies, and the environment, while also preventing potential harm. It further strives to promote the peaceful use of AI systems. The Recommendation seeks to establish a universally accepted normative instrument that not only articulates values and principles but also provides concrete policy recommendations for their practical implementation. It places significant emphasis on inclusive considerations such as gender equality and the protection of the environment and ecosystems. The Recommendations were adopted by193 UNESCO Member States in November 2021.
